As with many other piercings the outer labia piercing is one that has been done throughout history in many tribes and cultures. In the 1970’s and 1980’s the B&D and S&M scene and the adult porn industry made these piercings popular. These were often used as a form of infibulation (chastity) and with body jewellery not easy to get often padlocks were used in these piercings. These were also used to hang “dog tags” on to signify possession in the B&D scene and so can have items hung on them.
Some tattoo artists used adult porn videos to teach themselves how to pierce as these were the only videos available showing piercings being done, mostly the extreme porn sections.
By the 1990’s these piercings were starting to be done more for aesthetics and as the different designs in jewellery came on the market with segment rings and barbells with larger balls. These piercings don’t stretch as easily as the inner labia and so bead rings were the first popular and then the Ball closure ring and now many wearers will change to segment rings for comfort once healed.
At Body Pleasure Piercing we have found that when doing multiple outer labia it is best not to do them directly opposite each other as they can rub on each other and cause irritation and we will generally stager them so that they sit comfortably.
These piercings do make the area around the piercing slightly more sensitive but not a lot they are more aesthetic for the wearer and depending on ring size they can be stimulating for the partner
